Blockfest 19.–20.8.2016

Jälleen – kuten jo kahdeksana edellisenäkin vuonna – kaupungin ilma täyttyy urbaaneista rytmeistä elokuisena viikonloppuna. Toinen toistaan nokkelammat riimit, koukuttavat bassobiitit ja pahaenteiset trapsoundit saavat kaupunkilaisen kuulijan hurmokseen, kun yhdeksäs Blockfest herättää Tampereen henkiin tulevana perjantaina ja lauantaina.
Viime vuonna saatiin nauttia myös auringosta.
Festivaali on kasvanut vuosien varrella, ja artistikattauskin on vuosi vuodelta laajempi. Jotakin aina luonteessa muuttuu, kun pienestä tulee iso, mutta kasvu tarkoittaa myös uudenlaisia mahdollisuuksia. Siirtyminen Ratinaan ja lopulta myös itse stadionin otto käyttöön ovat mahdollistaneet yhä suurempien esiintyjämäärien sekä nimekkäiden kansainvälisten tähtien saamisen Tampereelle. Tämä Pohjoismaiden suurin hip hopiin keskittyvä kaupunkifestivaali on kasvustaan huolimatta – tai ehkä sen ansiostakin – ollut loppuunmyyty vuodesta toiseen. Tämäkään vuosi tuskin on poikkeus.

Vanhan liiton ihmisinä ja old schoolin ystävinä odotamme tämänvuotisilta Blockfesteiltä tietenkin eniten Nasia. Silloin kun Illmatic – yksi hip hop -historian parhaista levyistä – julkaistiin vuonna 1994, kukaan ei olisi ikimaailmassa uskonut, että jonain päivänä myös Tampereelle saataisiin ison maailman räppistaroja. Eihän silloin räppiä edes kuullut mistään, paitsi siltä coolilta kaverilta nauhoitetuilta C-kaseteilta. No, okei. Oli silloin jo CD-levyjäkin. Ja kävihän De La Soul täällä vuonna 1991, ihan siinä Hectorin, Sepi Kumpulaisen ja Popedan välissä. Mutta silti. On suorastaan uskomatonta, miten arkipäiväistä urbaani musiikki nykyään on. Ja hyvä niin. On upeaa, että on olemassa Blockfestin kaltaisia tapahtumia, jotka tuovat kotikylille hip hopin suurnimiä yhtä lailla from back in the day kuin trendiaallon harjaltakin puhumattakaan pienemmistä tekijöistä koko rapin ja hip hopin lavealta skaalalta. Silläpä me odotamme innokkaina viikonlopulta muun muassa myös näitä kotimaisia artisteja: Sofa, Ekow’n, Graciaksen ja Noah Kinin muodostama The Three Smiths, Ruger Hauer ft. Regina sekä Evelina. Tulossa on epäilemättä huikea festari, jolle kannattaa ehdottomasti osallistua, vaikka räppi ei se oma päälaji olisikaan.

Toimituksemme väki on osallistunut Blockfesteille niiden alusta saakka, ja vuosien varrella olemme saaneet todistaa mahtavia vetoja niin suomiräpin huipuilta kuin todellisilta maailmantähdiltäkin – kiitos Blockfestin, olemme nähneet piskuisessa kotikaupungissamme sellaisia maailmantähtiä kuin Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, Wu-Tang Clan, Memphis Bleek ja Mac Miller. Viime vuonna fiilistelimme täysillä T.I:ta, Wiz Khalifaa, Mobb Deepiä ja Ty Dollar $ignia. Tässä muutamia otoksia tunnelmistamme viime vuodelta:
Tent Stagella on meininki kohdillaan.
Tarebrush. Blockfesteillä näkee myös tuttuja kasvoja.
Välillä pitää syödä. Blockfesteillä on tarjolla monenlaista ruokaa.

Blockfesteillä muuten voi tapahtua mitä tahansa. Viime vuonna todistimme, kun pahaa aavistamaton tyttöparka sai festaripäivän päätteeksi – pyytämättä ja yllättäen – aidan takaa päälleen kultaisen suihkun. (Tuhdissa humalassa olleen pojan puolustukseksi sanottakoon, että hän ei nähnyt tyttöä. Kai.) Kunnioittakaa kuitenkin toisianne.
Lopuksi on vielä sanottava, että vaikka aina kuuluu kaikenlaista rutinaa festareiden aiheuttamista vaurioista ja ongelmista yms. – okei, olisi enemmän kuin suotavaa, että festarivieraat osaisivat käyttäytyä sikailun sijasta (ks. yllä) – mutta Blockfestin järjestäjät ansaitsevat määd propsit siitä, että tekevät tätä vuodesta toiseen tuoden samalla Tampereelle varmasti setelin jos toisenkin myös muiden toimijoiden kassaan. Lisäksi: ihmiset tarvitsevat sirkushuveja niin hyvinä kuin huonoinakin aikoina. Joten big up, Team Blockfest!
Blockfest 19–20 August 2016
Once more – like every year since 2008 – the city will be filled with urban rhythms on this August weekend. Clever rhymes upon clever rhymes, fat bass beats and ominous trap sounds will take the urban festival-goer to euphoria as the ninth Blockfest breathes new life into the city this Friday and Saturday.
Last year it was sunny.
Over the years, the festival has grown bigger, and its line-up gets more and more extensive each year. Something is always lost in personality when small becomes big, but growth also means new kind of possibilities. The move to the current area in Ratina and eventually taking the stadium as part of the festival area have helped the festival to build up the number of performers as well as enabled them to sign up internationally renowned artists to perform in Tampere. This urban festival, the biggest hip-hop festival in the Nordic countries, has been sold out every year regardless of it becoming bigger – or maybe just because of that. This year’s festival will surely make no exception.

This year, as old-schoolers and fans of good, old-fashioned rap, first and foremost we are looking forward to Nas, of course. When Illmatic – one of the best hip-hop albums of all times – was released in 1994, no one would have even imagined that one day our remote Tampere could see some international rap stars. Hell, you hardly even heard rap anywhere, except for the cassette tapes that you used to record music from that one cool friend. Well, OK. We did have CDs already back then. And we did get De La Soul to perform here in 1991, right between the established schlager, humor music and rock artists. But still. It’s almost unbelievable how commonplace urban music is nowadays. And it’s just great. It’s fantastic that there are events like Blockfest that bring big names in hip hop to our modest town both from back in the day as well as from the trendy forefront, not to mention the more underground performers covering the wide spectrum of modern-day rap and hip-hop. Therefore, we’re also excited about such Finnish acts as Sofa, The Three Smiths formed by Ekow, Gracias and Noah Kin, Ruger Hauer ft. Regina, and Evelina, among others. No doubt this will be a spectacular festival that we warmly recommend people to attend, even if rap wasn’t right up your alley.

People at our editorial staff have participated in Blockfest since the beginning, and over the years we’ve been lucky enough to witness great performances by the top names in the Finnish rap scene as well as true world-class artists – thanks to Blockfest, we’ve gotten so see, in our hometown, such stars as Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, Wu-Tang Clan, Memphis Bleek and Mac Miller. Last year we were blown away by T.I., Wiz Khalifa, Mobb Deep and Ty Dollar $ign. Here are some of our moments from last year’s Blockfest:

By the way, anything can happen at Blockfest. Last year we witnessed as one unsuspecting poor girl ended up receiving a golden shower from behind the fence at the end of the festival day. (To his defense, the highly intoxicated boy did not see the girl. We hope.) But anyhow, respect each other.
Lastly, we have to say that regardless of all the complaints about the damage and problems etc. caused by the festival heard every single year – okay, it’s more than desirable that festival guests should behave and not act as irresponsible pigs (see above) – the Blockfest organizers deserve mad props for doing this year after year and surely bringing a few euros to other businesses, too. In addition, people need fun and games in good times and in bad times alike. So, big up, Team Blockfest!
