Eletään maaseudulla, 1950-luvun Ranskassa. Marion Cotillardin esittämä intohimoissaan pakahtuva nuori Gabrielle tahtoo epätoivoisesti vastarakkautta, jollaista hän ei kuitenkaan saa, ja hänen estotonta, aikansa muottiin sopimatonta käytöstä ei hyvällä katsota. Todellista rakkautta ja fyysistä paloa janoava Gabrielle kohtaa pian toisen miehen, josta tulee hänen elämänsä suuri rakkaus.
Visuaalisesti viehättävä ja musiikkimaailmaltaan kaunis Nicole Garcian ohjaama aistillinen Kaikki mitä rakastimme (Mal de Pierres, 2016) on verkkaisesti etenevä draama, joka lopulta koskettaa odotettuakin voimakkaammin. Saavuttamaton intohimo, rakkaudettomuus ja torjutuksi tuleminen tuntuvat katsojankin nahkan alla. Ja mitä mahtaa mennä ohi elämässä, jos keskittyy vain kuvitelmiin ja haikailuun? Toisaalta vahvana taustalla kulkee myös uskomattoman luja pyyteetön rakkaus ja välittäminen.
Tämä on ehdottoman sopivaa katsottavaa joulunjälkeiseen pysähtyneisyyteen. Tunnelma kääriytyy ympärille kuin paksu viltti. Kunpa elokuvateatterissa voisi vielä siemailla viiniä ja syödä suklaakonvehteja.
From the Land of the Moon
This movie will take you to the French countryside in the 1950s. Played by Marion Cotillard, young Gabrielle is bursting with passion and desperately wishing to be loved – to no avail. Her uninhibited behavior isn’t what is expected of women at the time, and it’s highly frowned upon. Her own parents think of her as mentally unstable and are ready to send her off to an institute. An escape from this is an arranged married to a seasonal migrant worker, José, a farm hand at her parents’ farm. The two enter a loveless marriage both knowing in advance that life won’t be romantic or easy. Soon Gabrielle, still thirsty for love and physical contact, meets another man who will be the love of her life.
Directed by Nicole Garcia, the visually enchanting and sensual film From the Land of the Moon (Mal de Pierres, 2016) with beautiful music is a slow-paced drama that will eventually touch you more deeply than anticipated. The viewer, too, can almost feel the unattainable passion, lack of love and being rejected. And what are you going to miss in life if you only concentrate on fantasies and yearning for something else? There’s also a strong undercurrent of unbelievably powerful, unselfish love and caring.
This is a perfect watch for Yuletide quiescence. The atmosphere will wrap itself around you like a thick blanket. We wish you could sip some wine and eat chocolates at the cinema.
