Dokumenttielokuvat ovat aivan mahtavia. Ne avaavat ikkunan mitä moninaisimpiin tarinoihin ja ihmiskohtaloihin. Tällä kertaa Doc Lounge tuo Klubin valkokankaalle tuoreen saksalaiselokuvan The Promise (Das Versprechen). Siinä tarkastellaan yli kolmekymmentä vuotta sitten tapahtunutta kaksoismurhaa ja toisen teoista tuomitun oikeudenkäynnin laillisuutta ja oikeudenmukaisuutta.
Yhteisössään arvostettu yhdysvaltalaispariskunta, Derek ja Nancy Haysom, löydettiin kotoaan raa’asti murhattuina vuonna 1985. Vuotta myöhemmin epäiltyinä pidetyt pariskunnan tytär ja tämän saksalainen, diplomaattiperheestä tuleva poikaystävä pidätettiin Lontoossa sekkipetosten yhteydessä. Värikkäiden vaiheiden jälkeen molemmat siirrettiin Yhdysvaltoihin, ja poikaystävä, Jens Söring, tuomittiin murhista kahteen elinkautiseen ja tytär, Elizabeth Haysom, sai avunannosta 90-vuotisen tuomion.
Karen Steinbergerin ja Marcus Vetterin ohjaamassa dokumentissa osoitetaan, miten paljon virheitä aikanaan tehtiin Söringin oikeuskäsittelyssä, joka oli ensimmäisiä televisioituja oikeudenkäyntejä Yhdysvalloissa. Uudet todistusaineistot ja tutkimusmenetelmät kertovat toisenlaista tarinaa kuin jollaista kolmekymmentä vuotta sitten maalattiin. Elokuva ei niinkään yritä todistella Söringin syyttömyyttä kuin osoittaa oikeudenkäyntien puutteet. Se myös tarkastelee, miten ihminen voi selvitä vuosikymmeniä vankilaoloissa. Elokuva kertoo intohimoisesta, elämän tuhoavasta rakkaudesta – tositarinasta, jossa mielikuvitus on väkevässä roolissa eikä totuus ehkä koskaan selviä. Se kuitenkin on varmaa, että onnellista loppua sillä ei ainakaan ole.
The Promise – A Story About Life Ruined by Love
Documentaries are absolutely great. They open a window to a myriad of stories and human destinies. This time Doc Lounge is bringing on the screen at Klubi a new German film The Promise (Das Versprechen). It looks at a double murder from over thirty years ago and the legality and justness of the trials of one of the two convicted of the murders.
A US-based couple, esteemed members of their community, Derek and Nancy Haysom, was found brutally murdered in their home in 1985. A year later their daughter and her German boyfriend of a diplomatic family, who were considered suspects, were arrested in London following a check fraud. After various, colorful phases they both were extradited to the USA, and the boyfriend, Jens Söring, was convicted of two first-degree murders and given two life sentences, while the daughter, Elizabeth Haysom, received a 90-year sentence for accessory to murder before the fact.
Karen Steinberger and Marcus Vetter’s documentary shows how many flaws there were at Söring’s trial, which was one of the first televised trials in the USA. New evidence and methods are telling a story that differs from the one that was painted thirty years ago. The film doesn’t necessarily try to prove that Söring is innocent but it wants to underline the faults of his trial. It is also a study on how a person can survive in prison for over 30 years. Moreover, it is a tale about passionate, life-ruining love – a true story in which imagination plays a major role and the truth may never be revealed. One thing is for sure, though, this one does not have a happy ending.
