Englantilaissyntyinen mutta jo parikymmentä vuotta Suomea ja Tamperetta kodikseen kutsunut Charles Sandison on luonut Finlaysonin vanhassa tehdasrakennuksessa toimivan Galleria Himmelblaun yhteydessä olevaan halliin now/here-näyttelyn. Teos The Nature of Light on jatkuvassa muutostilassa oleva työ, jonka taiteilija on ohjelmoinut C++-ohjelmointikielellä. Aloitushetkellä työ koostui 5 488 543 valopisteestä, joka vastasi Suomen heinäkuista väkilukua. Siitä hetkestä eteenpäin tietokoneohjelma, joka hyödyntää Tilastokeskuksen väkilukuennusteita, on muokannut valopisteitä. Ne ovat kuin eliöitä itsessään – ne lisääntyvät, monistuvat, muodostavat yhteisöjä ja lopulta sammuvat. Monistuessaan ne myös siirtävät niille ohjelmoidun digitaalisen DNA:n eteenpäin, mutta pienet geneettisen koodin muutokset aiheuttavat seuraavassa sukupolvessa aina hiukan aiempaa erilaista käytöstä. Living Light Art in a Factory Hall
English-born artist Charles Sandison, who has called Finland and Tampere home for twenty years now, has created an exhibition called now/here at an old factory hall located above Galleria Himmelblau in the Finlayson area. His work The Nature of Light is in constant state of change. The artist used C++ programming language and projections of population growth by Statistics Finland as a basis. The work began with 5 488 543 light spots, a number corresponding to the number of inhabitants in Finland in July. From then on, the program has been modifying the work and manipulating the spots. The light spots are like organisms – they multiply, duplicate themselves, create communities and eventually go out. As they duplicate themselves, they transmit their programmed digital DNA to the new spots, but slight changes in the genetic code make the next generation behave a bit differently from the previous one. Extremely interesting! Visitors get to step into the universe of these light spots and be part of the artwork with the help of mirrors. It is highly recommended that you go and seek some light therapy here – this is a true experience!
